James R. Dorland grew up in Canton, Ohio. James R Dorland was married to his wife Patricia for 59 years. He had three daughters and 8 grandchildren. In addition he also had 2 sisters. James R. Dorland was an avid fan of football and basketball and wound up being a Secondary High School Teacher before moving onto the realm of Adult Education. He later became the director for several prestigious Adult Education organizations. He died at the Age of 82, October 7th, 2008.

Employment
James R. Dorland grew up in Canton and played basketball and football in his high school and college years. He then moved on to coaching basketball at North Canton High School, Mckinley and then Lehman. He received a High School Teacher fellowship from Ford’s Foundation Fund for the Advancement of Education and was on a leave of absence studying and travelling throughout the United States from 1954-1955. Dorland eventually wound up being the first director of Adult Education in Canton Public schools from 1962-1965. While living in Canton he was also an elder and teacher at the First Christian Church.
In 1965, he joined the National Education Association as an associate director for its Adult Education Service division. He later became the executive director for the National Association for the Public Continuing and Adult Education. Afterwards he became the dean of Morrisville College before Retiring in 1992. He then went on to produce a personal newsletter based on current events for associates and friends in the Washington D.C. area.

Inducted into the International Hall of Fame for Adults and Continuing Education, in 1996.

Professional Interest Areas
Dorland has lead workshops on the philosophy of competency-based adult education. Since the main goal behind Federal Aid to Adult Education is to make more adults employable, responsible and less dependent, Dorland has pushed for more studies in Adult performance overall.
Major Contributions to Adult Education
Dorland often spoke and wrote on the effect of Federal Aid on Adult Education programs. He suggested that adult and community educators would benefit from working alongside each other.
