Major Contributions to Adult Education

Founding editor of The International Journal of Lifelong Education, for the past twenty-five years.  Serves on the editorial boards of the Adult Education Quarterly, International Education, Convergence, and the Journal of Educational Gerontology.

Peter Jarvis is a pioneer in the field of adult education. He developed a hallmark sensory learning theory that focused on the process of learning through social experiences. He believed that all five human senses (i.e., sound, sight, smell, taste, and touch) are involved with real learning (sensory learning). As we go through life, we encounter novel situations, and we use one of more of our senses for the potential learning situation. He posited three different levels, which include non-learning, non-reflective learning, and reflective learning. All three levels are further broken down routes for learning. His major contribution of a learning process model shed light on how learning occurs for adults and also broke down the components of learning. His model helps us understand how learning occurs throughout the lifespan, teaches us how to empower learners, and also clarifies how social roles are involved.

He serves as Chair of the Board of Editors of Comparative Education and serves on a number of editorial boards including the the Adult Education Quarterly, International Education, Convergence, and the Journal of Educational Gerontology. He has been appointed to the Consultative Committee and helped prepare for the UNESCO World Conference on Adult Education. He has been involved in research on a global level in such countries as the U.K., Hong Kong, and Australia. Also, Peter Jarvis has fulfilled the role of an examiner for thesis and dissertations in numerous countries.
